Do Satellite Data Correlate with In Situ Rainfall and Smallholder Crop Yields? Implications for Crop Insurance

چکیده
Adverse weather is one of the most prevalent sources risk in agriculture. Its impacts are aggravated by lack effective management mechanisms. That why resource-poor farmers tend to respond risks adopting low-capital investment, low-return, and low-risk agricultural practices. This challenge needs be addressed with innovative strategies. One tools that gaining traction, especially developing countries, weather-index-based insurance (WII). However, WII uptake still low because several constraints, which basis risk. study attempts address this problem evaluating suitability TAMSAT, CHIRPS, MODIS, Sentinel-2 data for WII. We evaluated first three datasets against situ rainfall measurements at different spatial temporal scales over maize-growing season a smallholder farming area South Africa. CHIRPS had higher correlations measured than TAMSAT MODIS NDVI. performed equally well 10 km 25 scales, better monthly daily 16-day time steps (maximum R = 0.78, mean 0.72). Due reliable historical yield data, we conducted surveys consecutive seasons using an objective crop cut method. then assessed how NDVI related maize yield. There was poor relationship between these variables (R2 ≤ 0.14). The concludes pointing out does not always have linear vegetation indices, water main yield-limiting factor systems. To minimize risk, process designing must include identification factors specific localities. Alternatively, insurers could use requirement methods design

Does Participation in Farmer Field School Extension Program Improve Crop Yields? Evidence from Smallholder Tea Production Systems in Kenya
Agricultural Extension services are among the most important rural services in developing countries. The services are considered to be a key driver of technological change and productivity growth in agriculture. In Kenya, like in the rest of the developing economies, agricultural extension has largely been delivered through supply–driven approaches. Due to perceived low impact of agricultural e...
متن کاملStochastic disaggregation of monthly rainfall data for crop simulation studies
Stochastic weather generators are useful for producing daily sequences that reproduce climatic statistics aggregated to, e.g., a monthly time scale, for use with biological simulation models. This paper describes a stochastic weather generator that disaggregates monthly rainfall by adjusting input parameters or by constraining output to match target rainfall totals, and demonstrates its use wit...
متن کاملBoosting crop yields with plant steroids.
Plant sterols and steroid hormones, the brassinosteroids (BRs), are compounds that exert a wide range of biological activities. They are essential for plant growth, reproduction, and responses to various abiotic and biotic stresses. Given the importance of sterols and BRs in these processes, engineering their biosynthetic and signaling pathways offers exciting potentials for enhancing crop yiel...
متن کامل2007 Crop Insurance Summary
All agricultural producers face recurring risks, significant among them being production risk. Many factors contribute to production risk, including adverse weather conditions such as drought or floods, fires, insects or pests, and disease. These events can devastate a crop, significantly reducing yield and farmer revenue. Since the only way to completely avoid all production risks is to stop p...
